Whilst chemical MIME represents a model for collaborative working it
would in some circumstances be better if the interactive model could be
embedded into the page rather than relying on an external (to the
browser) application. This can be achieved through the Java
programming language developed by Sun Microsystems, Inc
Above is an example of a
Java applet
which renders the fullerene C60 from a file containing the
coordinates of the 60 carbon atoms in "xyz" format.
More sophisticated applets would
render the bonds as well as the atomic coordinates.
